Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC (September 2007)

During a conversation with my dear friend Wilma Roberts, I found out about a group of Puerto Rican soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center with varying degrees of injuries suffered in Iraq and other combat zones. Wilma, an employee of the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Office, has made it her mission to visit this group of “Boricuas,” bringing to them her brand of sassiness and good spirits. From what she tells me, these weekly visits are as important to her as to the soldiers. It was during this conversation that she suggested I pay a visit to them. My first thought was “What can I possibly bring of value to them? What can I possibly do to show my respect and appreciation?" These men are not only my island “brothers” but they are also putting their lives on the line for all the liberties we sometimes take for granted. But Wilma's response was simple: “Bring them your book.” Armed with books and packets of mango and coconut cookies we headed for the hospital. One by one the veterans assembled casually in the lobby where I had a chance to meet them one-on-one. It was a wonderful visit. Not only did they appreciate the book but they loved the cookies. After a couple of hours of great conversation, I had to go but I promised them more visits.

Here are some pictures from that visit I wanted to share with you. These soldiers are a part of our community and we have to let them know that their efforts are not going unnoticed. If you want to let these group of “Boricuas” know how you feel with a word of support, send us your messages, and I will gladly forward them. I’m sure they’ll be delighted to hear from you!
