A Short History of the Washington Chalk Festival
1993:
Virginia Rosario was our first guest artist for our first year of the festival.
1994:
The Capital Children's Museum hosted the second Chalk Festival on its playground.
1995:
At our first appearance at the Kennedy Center's Open House Arts Festival, even the littlest ones joined in the fun.
1996:
Our biggest year ever, with 22 artists participating to celebrate the Kennedy Center's 25th Anniversary.
1997:
For our Salute to the Circus, guest artist Michael Walberg enlisted the help of the crowd.
1998:
Our colorful dragon mural from that year lived on as a backdrop for the Multicultural Book Festival readings in November.
1999:
For a different approach, we created a 3-D tower sculpture of interlocking chalk panels.
2000:
Guest artist A.J. Valinote shows off his colorful tribute to the arts of Latin America.
2001:
Chalk Festival founder Edwin Fontánez creates a vivid portrait for the Kennedy Center's 30th Birthday Celebration.
2002:
Sean McDonough, our guest artist from Toronto, Canada, poses by his stunning tribute to opera.
2005:
Judit Ilie creates a stunning and mouthwatering bowl of fruit.
