THE IMAGINERO: Art and Devotion (excerpt)
Level: Grades 4-6Subject: Social Studies, History, Art
OVERVIEW
This unit provides a look at the history of the imaginero or wood carver. For more than 400 years in the New World, these artisans have used their carving skills and devotion to their religion to create works of beauty and spirituality. By looking at the changing attitudes towards these artists, students will learn the role sacred objects play in society. They will also explore perceptions of “naive” art versus “high” art. Through writing and art assignments, they will appreciate the contributions of craftsmen who invested their art with purpose and personal devotion.
OBJECTIVES
Students will:
- Become familiar with the history of carving in the New World.
- Learn about the similarities of wood carving in Puerto Rico, Guatemala, and New Mexico, as well as the Hopi Indians.
- Learn Spanish vocabulary words related to wood carving.
- Write a story.
- Discuss the changing role of women as workers.
- Discuss the role of sacred objects in society.
- Create a “retablo” painting.
