The Imaginero (ee-ma-hee-NARE-oh) is a craftsman who carves santos (SAHN-tohs) or saints from blocks of wood. Then he paints them in lifelike colors. Some santos were carved to be displayed in churches but many were made for people to use at home altars if they lived too far from a church. There are still a few imagineros working in Puerto Rico today but most of the santos they carve are sold to tourists and collectors.
