Malanga Leaf Magnet

Whoever has had the good fortune to see drops of dew clinging to the velvety, dark green leaves of a malanga plant will agree: the sunshine makes them sparkle like liquid diamonds. One of my fondest memories of growing up in “el campo” is sneaking outside  when my grandfather went to fetch the cow for the milk to put in our morning coffee. Still in my nightshirt, I would be struck by the quiet spectacle of malanga leaves wet with rain. I would then take a leaf and swing it back and forth, watching the drops rush to the other side without leaving a trace of moisture. This game would go on and on until the water finally slid off, landing on my feet in the crisp, cold grass.

Golden Cemi Magnet

The words ‘Taino’ and ‘Boricua’ are synonymous, just ask any Puerto Rican. The Tainos were the foundation for much of Puerto Rican culture today. Even after more than 500 years, they are a continuous source of inspiration and pride. One of their most familiar and sacred objects is the Cemi. Believed to be endowed with mystical powers, the Cemi represented all the positive forces of nature and symbolized fertility, its shape reflecting the topography of the island.

“Grandma’s Casita”

This beautiful, hand made three-dimensional plaque depicts one of my favorite memories of growing up in the countryside. My grandparent’s little house, a humble wood structure with a red tin roof, became a musical box on rainy days. The sharp sound of rain hitting the roof combined with the soft patter of drops on the banana leaves made a soothing and hypnotic music. Anyone who has dozed off to the “song of rain on the tin roof” knows exactly what I’m talking about! This plaque can either hang on the wall or rest elegantly on its own easel. “Flamboyan in the Backyard”
