Edwin and RickySeptember 2006

Dear Friends,

As a soft blanket of fireflies and cricket songs lay itself over the early September nights, I come to terms with the inevitable end of summer’s bright, long days. Time to look forward to what fall and winter will bring…

First, for those locals interested in what’s happening in their own backyard, I want to extend to you my personal invitation to come join us at the Kennedy Center’s Open House Arts Festival this coming Saturday for our annual Washington Chalk Festival. You can find out more here. Come on over and get down with us on the ground to leave your artistic impressions on the sidewalk!

Secondly, in tandem with the season’s changes, I also want to take this opportunity to share with you Exit Studio’s upcoming book schedule. This time the subject is poetry!  Azul: Mi primer poemario is my first illustrated poetry book for children. Poetry has served as the foundation of most of my creativity and has fostered my interest in literature. And it is with this specific purpose that I want to start planting this seed for today’s children. I hope to encourage them in their own pursuit of reading. How many “sparks” of inspiration have been “unleashed” on me just from reading a single sentence from a poem! From the exquisite work of Pablo Neruda to that of Walt Whitman--the rhythms and cadences of their beautiful poems simply take your breath away!

The second project I’m working on is dedicated to even younger children. Hadas, sirenas y sapos: Mis primeras nanas contains a series of original lullabies that I have written especially for the special little ones in all our lives. As the publishing dates draw near, we will supply you with more juicy details. For the time being I will leave you with a few lines from one of my favorite poems to be included in the book which I wrote back in 1993. It was inspired by and dedicated to my grandmother, Ramona…

“El suelo húmedo de sereno huele a recuerdos,
La niebla reposa entristecida
Sobre el rosal abandonado…
La luz que quemaba tenue
Ya se aleja con la suave brisa
Y la vida que latía en la casa
Se ha perdido en la noche,
Entre lágrimas de luna,
En el crepúsculo dorado…

(From El Jardín de las Gardenias, 1993)

Until next time,

Edwin
