The Imaginero

The Imaginero

ImagineroThe imaginero, or santero as he is sometimes known, is an artisan dedicated to carving wooden icons of Catholic saints. The tradition was brought to the Americas by Spanish missionaries who needed icons made for the hundreds of churches that were being built during colonization. The local craftsmen brought their own style to their works yet, as devotional artists, never took personal credit for their creations. Exit Studio used this theme of finding personal spiritual strength in dedication to an art form as the backdrop for its video Heart of the Imaginero: Little Wood Carver. This centuries-old tradition must rely on young artisans taking up the craft in order to survive and the few remaining practitioners are irreplaceable mentors.
